TEMPLE FOR THE EARTH
2017
I designed and co-led the construction of a temporary meditation pagoda.
Temple for the Earth employs a Turrell-inspired skylight that doubles as an impluvium in rainstorms while keeping visitors dry to create a sacred central column of environmental habitation. The aim of the pagoda was to provide a space of contemplation and solemnity for visitors during the week, intending to incite a renewed reverence for the environment and Earth in light of today's climate crisis.
The temple was designed to survive use for one week in a temporary arts community and then be burned down to ash.
The exterior was blackened using shou sugi ban techniques. The structure was built with a grant from the Firefly Arts Collective.
